CWA Printing Union

The "Make-Up Man" by Max Kalish is a sculpture was commissioned by the New York Post as a "tribute to newspaper craftsmen." Dorothy Schiff, Publisher of the New York Post, donated the sculpture to New York Typographical Union, CWA Local 14156 where it represents a proud craft that has its roots firmly planted in labor history. Printing was one of the earliest forms of mass communication and while production methods have changed, the need for skilled workers in our industry continues. Workers with these new skills are joining our ranks and they will continue the unbroken line of organized printers that stretches back 150 years.

CWA Print Shops

The purpose of the web site is to publicize and provide to the general public, Communications Workers of America, CWA Locals and their affiliates, easy access to printing services requiring the use of the "CWA Printing Sector Union Label" and one of the most recognized union labels in the industry.

The Printing, Publishing and Media Workers Sector of CWA represents men and women in a diverse range of occupations. Not only in the traditional means: daily newspapers, publishing and distribution, the U. S. Government Printing Office, and commercial printing and mailing operations; but also in the fields of graphic design, web design/ publishing, information technology professionals, programming and development, and specialty manufacturing.

Our union combines the proud heritage of the International Typographical Union—the oldest continuously operating union in America—with the dynamic vision of the Communications Workers of America. The combination of these two influences provides our members and their families with responsive representation and progressive programs.

Our 1987 merger into CWA was a recognition of the evolution of the information age in America and has proven to be a win-win situation for both organizations. We are proud to have been a forerunner of the movement to focus the strength of unions in information industries within CWA.

One of the key values that we share with CWA is our commitment to empowering working people to improve the quality of life for themselves and their communities.
